[ Bio-Hues: Sustainable Eyewear With Nature’s Palette ]

Role

M.A. Student Collaborative and Industrial Designer / Product and material designer at Aalto University

Outcome

PLA plastic infused with natural pigments, ready for 3D printing filament extrusion.

Bio-Hues is an innovative project that seeks to bring a new dimension to the world of products through sustainable and eco-friendly colouring techniques. Using natural dyes derived from nature itself, Bio-Hues experiments with colouring Polylactide (PLA), a bio-plastic produced from milk protein, to create a line of sustainable eyewear. Maple Leaf (green), Beet Root (pink), and Turmeric (yellow) are used as pigments, producing a palette inspired by the colours found in nature. The pigments are carefully melted into the PLA, creating unique drips of plastic that are then ground down, reheated, and extruded to create a filament for the 3D printing of eyewear prototypes. Bio-Hues represents a future where we can view the world through nature's own hues, making a positive impact on sustainability and the environment.
