[ Designing Future-ready Creatives: IMAGINE, ACT, IMPACT ]

Role
Build Lab Instructor at U School / B.S. Student Project Lead at University of the Arts

Outcome
The U School Capstone project produced a teacher strategy guide, IMAGINE, ACT, IMPACT, to foster creative confidence in students, emphasizing persistence, embracing failure, and community impact through design and craftsmanship.

The U School is a North Philadelphia-based experimental high school that integrates design thinking, skill-based learning, and self-guided education into its public curriculum. The school's aim is to empower students to pursue their passions and become creative problem solvers. In this regard, the school's curriculum centres on finding what students love, developing their dreams, and pursuing them.

To this end, the school has a maker space called The Build Lab, where students can plan and prototype their creative ideas. The Build Lab curriculum aims to promote creative confidence and expression among students. The goal of this Bachelor of Science Capstone project was to develop a guide for teachers on how to incorporate more creative practices into their curriculum.

The resulting strategy guide, IMAGINE, ACT, IMPACT, focuses on building creative values within students. The values that the guide emphasizes include persistence in the face of challenges, embracing failure as part of success, and empowering students to change their environment and positively impact their community. The guide also includes techniques and processes to support student's development of craftsmanship, design, and technique. This project highlights the critical role of creativity in education, particularly for disadvantaged and minority populations, as it is a necessary life skill that enables them to thrive.
