[ Learning Things: Designing Positive Learning Spaces with Student-Driven Solutions ]
Role
Design Intern / Workshop Facilitator at Milder Office
Outcome
Learning Things produced a set of student-designed ideas for creating better learning spaces that reflect their needs and how they feel about their classroom environment.
Milder Office creates furniture for learning spaces that nurture quality education. As a co-workshop coordinator, the focus was to reimagine the classroom with student-driven solutions. The USchool students in Philadelphia used a kit of nonobjective and abstract shapes to think abstractly about their classroom environment, needs, and emotions. The kit included shapes that ranged in specificity to represent tangible and intangible ideas. Students were able to explore the possibilities of simple shapes with infinite meaning, and suggestive shapes like arrows to help them think about space and flow. This project encouraged students with design for serious play methodology, allowing them to generate new ideas and develop a better understanding of their needs. The outcome was student-inspired designs that can be used to create positive learning spaces.
